How to place art at home?

The interior of your home is not only related to colour, pattern, texture, or angles. It is way beyond that if you want to create a pleasing blend of these elements you should focus on precise execution of proportion and right placement. We tend to have all the right elements to anchor a living room but to our disappointment, it ends up creating a visual imperfection.

While designing your home a lot of questions pop up in your mind – how low should you hang your favourite artwork? Or Where should you place the best showpiece so that it will not look cumbrous? Or What is the right size of the rug for your room? We’ve got answers to your worries.

Details you should consider

Now it is time to be a pro in the art of designing your space. Though you should not hesitate in experimenting but do take care of minute rules to make it look right. Let us tell you how you can be an expert at it.

Right colour pallet

When you are placing art at your place you should not forget about the already present colours in the vicinity. Always try to match the artwork in such a way that it compliments the colours of your interior. The artwork can add an accent colour to the interior but if and only if it blends well with the overall colour scheme.

Decorating style accordance

Your decorating style reflects your taste in art. It is crucial to keep the decorating style in accordance with your preference. Symmetrical styles are traditional and formal whereas asymmetrical styles are modern. If you have cottage-style rooms prefer vintage or tropical artwork and for modern rooms go for large and abstract pieces of art.

Right height for your light

People tend to hang, wall and pendant lights too high and lamps too low. Now how to fix it? The thumb rule which you can follow to get the hang of it.

  • You should always hang the light such that the bottom edges of the shades in the living room should be at eye level or just above when you are seated. The idea is to facilitate an unobstructed view of your guest to you or vice-versa.

Placing a lamp at your bedside table??

  • Well, for the lamp the rule says – when you are sitting up in bed the bottom edge of the shade should be at your chin level.
  • It is always better to keep the tops of all the lampshades at the same height if you are decorating with different lamp shades in one room.

What about Pendant lighting?

  • So, hang your pendant lighting so that the bottom levitates approximately 30-34 inches from the surface or if your ceiling is higher than 8 feet it can go a few inches higher. It is done so to allow a clearance of at least 7 feet for people to walk underneath.

In love with sconces?

Placing sconces follow a bit of a different rule.

  • The sconces should be placed at or above eye level.
  • And if you are placing more than one sconces in a row, position them 8 to 10 feet apart for an immaculate glow.
  • In a mood to hang them on either side of the bathroom mirror, position them 36-40 inches apart.
  • Love them at the sides of your bed, then they should be hanged such that they are at eye level when you are sitting in bed.

Focus on Artwork Locus

When it comes to placing artwork the most common mistake is that we tend to place our artwork at neck-craning height. If you have ever been to a museum did you notice the height at which the artwork is placed: At eye level.

  • The thumb rule for hanging the artwork is that it should be placed such that its mid-point lies between 57-60 inches from the floor.
  • If the ceiling of your room is more than 8 feet then you have the option to place the artwork a little higher than 60 inches.
  • Pick the midpoint and stick with it for consistency. And if you are placing a group of artwork, envision it as one and then choose the midpoint.
  • If you are placing a tall artwork on the wall then the rule says – Keep the lower edge of the artwork one foot above the floor.

Exceptions are always there, the same is the case here.

  • If you are placing the artwork over a piece of furniture. Then it should span one-third of its width.
  • 6-8 inches above the furniture is just the right height. The art should not look as if it is floating above your furniture, it should connect visually.

Keeping every artwork in line with other pieces is preferred but it is also worth considering that all your frames need not look the same. If you want to add a zing to your interior you can mix and match shapes and sizes of similar coloured artifacts. A tip from our side is to try all distressed vintage-look collectibles mostly in black with some gold or silver accent or some in all gold or silver tone. This will make a mini-collection cohesion of your own.

On a final note…

Your abode is your canvas you can decorate the way you want. Your interior reflects you, your taste of art, and your love for art. Do not hesitate in showing your favourite piece of art to your guests. Just the thing that you have to keep in mind are the rules. Follow the rules to make your artwork look pleasing and effortlessly amalgamated in the interior of your casa.
